Where should a surge limiting device be installed?

A surge limiting device is designed to protect gas pressure systems from sudden surges that could potentially cause damage or unsafe conditions. The ideal location for installing such a device is at the regulator. This is because the regulator controls the pressure of gas flowing through the system, adjusting it to a lower, more manageable level for safe use. By placing the surge limiting device at the regulator, it can effectively monitor and respond to fluctuations in pressure that occur after the gas enters the system, thereby mitigating the risk of overpressure that could harm downstream components or appliances.

In contrast, installing a surge limiting device on a high-pressure gas pipe, at the top of an expansion tank, or on a domestic gas refrigerator would not provide the same level of protection. These locations would not effectively regulate the pressure that feeds into the main distribution network, nor would they address the surges occurring at critical control points like the regulator.
